21 December 2014 the maiden project of LC PJ Mutiara with Club Branch PJ Central, a Health Awareness Project held at JKKK Multi-Purpose Hall in Broga, a small town that sits on the border of Selangor [50 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur] and Negri Sembilan. Majority of those residing in Broga are elderly Chinese and a small number of Orang Asli population. Taking the challenge with uncertainties on the turnout, as this is a relatively new area for us to tap, the working committee decided to conduct the project from 9.00 am to 2.00 pm only.
5 banners measuring 12’ x 5’ were placed at strategic location in Broga and informative leaflet designed by OC Anco Lim were distributed days before the event with help of some PJ Central members.
Pfizer (M) Sdn Bhd conducted the Body Mass Index, blood pressure, cholesterol & glucose test with Doctor Ranjit from IUM as the in-house consulting doctor for the day with the assistance of Lion Tracy of PJ Central as translator, as majority of the residents are Hakka and other Chinese dialect. Puan Rozita with her assistant from National Cancer of Malaysia had a very informative cancer awareness counter with various leaflets and display of the various types of cancer. She even taught some ladies to conduct self- examination on their breast and gave out free mammogram appointment checks. The Ministry of Health set-up the deworming counter giving out free vitamin C to children and deworming dosage to children.
Seldom do we see Hearing Test conducted at Health Awareness and this big blue van was a big hit. Two audiologists from Perfect ENT Hearing & Speech Centre Sdn Bhd conducted an evaluation of the sensitivity of a person's sense of hearing using an audiometer. The patient seated inside a small room inside the van place a headphone and the audiologist will release some sound waves for the patient to response too.
Glaucoma is a condition in which the nerve cells which transmit information from the eye to the brain become damaged. This prevents visual information from getting from the retina in the eye to the brain and is often associated with a build-up of pressure in the eye. The Vision Screening of various types was conducted by 3 trained personnel of Glaucoma Society Malaysia under the recommendation of Mr Steven Chan, the President of Glaucoma Society of Malaysia.
National Blood Bank managed to get 19 youngsters to donate blood. We now realized that Broga made up of mainly elderly residents, therefore it was a feat itself to get these 19 to donate. However, we were told that they managed to collect 100 bags few years back. Two doctors and four nurses from Klinik Pergigian Kajang Poliklinik Komuniti Kajang conducted the dental checks.
Four professional stylists from Snips College of Creative Arts had their hands full with the young and old introducing latest hair trends. The stylists were surprised that a few young orang asli girls were all game at having designs shaved on half of their head and were very happy with their newly acquired style.
FCPAAM (Federation of Chinese Physicians & Acupuncturists Association of Malaysia) saw many patients. This Chinese Manipulative therapy often used in conjunction with acupuncture, fire cupping, moxibustion, fire cupping, Chinese herbalism, tai chi and qi gong. Patients can opt for neck, back, leg massage to loosen their muscles, reduce joint pain and increase blood flow.
Vote of Thanks to PP Lion Nelson for sponsoring the PA system and Lion Eric Foong for assisting in the set-up.
